However, before you invest in your brand-new furniture, it’s important that you take the time to check it will fit perfectly. This means that you will need to compare the sofa dimensions against the measurements of your home.
In this guide, we’re going to walk you through the process of choosing the right sofa size, including finding out its dimensions, measuring your chosen space, and checking it will fit when delivered
Find out your sofa dimensions
First of all, you need to determine the dimensions of your desired sofa, corner sofa, or sofa bed. At Timeless Chesterfields, we make our furniture dimensions easy to find by listing them on all our product pages. You’ll need to find out the sofa width (W), height (H), and depth (D).
A corner sofa will have additional width (W1 and W2) and depth (D1 and D2) dimensions to note down, thanks to the additional section. You’ll also need the height (H).

How to measure if a sofa will fit in your space
Once you have your ideal sofa in mind, you’ll need to make sure that you can comfortably fit it in your chosen location. The easiest way to do this is by mapping or marking out the footprint of your new piece with old newspaper or masking tape.
You’ll need to ensure that you have enough space to move around your sofa and accommodate any other room features (e.g. a door opening, access to an electrical socket) or nearby furniture.
How to measure for a sofa
To measure a regular sofa, take note of its dimensions then mark out the depth (D) and width (W) of your sofa on the floor — this should correspond to the footprint of the piece. You can then use your tape or newspaper to map out this area.
If necessary, you can also measure the height (H) to check that there are no vertical obstructions.
How to measure for a corner sofa
To gauge the space your corner sofa will take up, use your tape to measure out the two widths of the sofa (W1 and W2), which are the two longest sides of the L-shape. This will give you the maximum footprint of the piece. Mark them with masking tape then, from the ends of these lines, measure out the depths of each section (D1 and D2). You can now complete the outline as shown in the diagram, allowing you to visualise the sofa footprint.
If required, you can then measure the height (H) to check that there are no vertical obstructions.
How to measure for a sofa bed
To measure out the footprint of a sofa bed with the mattress stowed, you can follow the process for a regular sofa. Once you’ve marked the area out, you can measure the extended depth (ED) from the back of the sofa (W) to find out how far the bed will extend outwards once it’s pulled out.
If required, you can then measure the height (H) to check that there are no vertical obstructions.
How to measure to get your sofa into the house
Once you’ve confirmed that your brand-new sofa will fit snugly into its location, you will need to make sure that it’s able to reach your desired spot by measuring your front door, hallways, inner doors, and — if necessary — your staircase. Doing so will give you peace of mind that your delivery will go smoothly, and your delivery team will have sufficient access to your home.
How to get a sofa through a front door
Before delivery, you’ll need to measure your front door to ensure your front door is large enough. The first step is to compare the dimensions of your front door and the piece.
The easiest way to do this is by measuring the width of your door frame (A) and comparing it to the height (H) of your sofa, or measuring the height of your door frame (B) and comparing it to the width (W) of your sofa — if the door dimensions are larger in either case, you should be able to fit your furniture through. Remember that there may need to be a small amount of clearance for any manoeuvring required to get the sofa through.
If you have anything blocking your front door from fully opening, you will need to measure the space at its narrowest point and compare it to the height (H) of your sofa.
Should your desired sofa be too big to fit through the front door, you will need to explore other options, such as trying another entrance or removing a window. How to get a sofa through hallways and inner doors
Unless your access door leads directly to the room where your sofa will be situated, you’ll probably need to navigate some hallways and inner doors to get it to where it needs to be.
Measure the narrowest points of any halls (C) or doors (D) that need to be passed through and compare them to the height (H) of your sofa — if all your measurements are larger than the height, you should be able to get your sofa through without a problem. Be sure to look out for any possible obstacles like radiators, cupboards, or other fixed furniture along the route as they may hamper your progress.
How to get a sofa upstairs
If you live above the ground floor or plan on putting your sofa upstairs, you will need to examine your stairway to check there is enough clearance. Take the time to measure any staircases at their narrowest points (F) and, as long as these exceed the height (H) of your sofa, you shouldn’t have any issues moving your new furniture.
Should your staircase have a landing, you’ll need to measure the depth (E), width (F), and height (G) of the space and compare them to the depth (D), width (W), and height (H) of your sofa. If the landing dimensions are greater, you should be able to fit your sofa through.
If you think your sofa may need to be lifted over the bannister, measure the distance between the rail and the ceiling and see if it’s greater than the depth (D) of your sofa and, if it is, there shouldn’t be a problem doing so.
Note: At Timeless Chesterfields, most of our sofas (those with wooden bun feet or castors) have removable feet that, when taken off, can lower the sofa height by 5cm (2 inches).
